This WIP document, written by Dean, the founder of Punch Digital, outlines the companies culture, expectations, plans and other things that are central to how Punch Digital operates. It should be used as an insight into the business, as a guide for all stakeholders, and as a way to perhaps explain what, and why we’re trying to do.
Let’s not beat around the bush, we need to be profitable to survive, grow and build the Punch Digital legacy.
We want to be as open and transparent as possible. We have nothing to hide, and we’re very proud of what we’ve done. Obviously certain things can’t be disclosed, such as confidential info, but if there’s anything you want to know, just ask, and we’ll answer as best as possible.
I personally want to say that I’ve run the best business I could, and that I’ve made Punch Digital somewhere where I’d personally like to work, enjoy working with and is an inspiration to others.
I also want to help folk starting out on their creative career, either through creating junior and apprenticeship positions, or by helping to reform and change the process by which young people try to enter the creative industries.
Punch Digital should be recognisable as the go-to creative firm for CGI and other digital creations, such as interactive content or motion graphics.
Pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
Experimenting with new technology and kit, to see if we can further help our clients.
Testing ideas and theories.
Honesty and trust
Never selling something we don’t believe in
To be paid
Supply briefs, ideas, concepts and other info.
Honesty and trust
I don’t really need to explain this do I?
Simply treat others as you’d like to be treated. Or as some would say, “don’t be a dick”.
Development & Progression
If you’re not moving forward, then you’re done. You need to be driven to want to learn and progress. Training, development projects and opportunities to learn will always be part of any roll. Never become complacent.
Progression in Punch Digital is very linear. If you’re a competent Junior, then you’ll soon be asked to step up to a Middle-weight, and perhaps help lead and guide Juniors.
Punch Digital is tiny compared to a lot of other firms, so expect to wear many hats, on various projects. Personally that’s what I love, and it’s a sure way to never become bored or boring!
You may be asked to interact with clients. Remember they are people too!
It may not be much right now, but we’re working towards creating an inspiring, creative, safe and comfortable environment. That includes both physical spaces, and individual well-being.
Overtime is always discussed, and never presumed. However there will be occasions where overtime may be necessary.
This is a professional business, with clients to service who trust us with the projects and budgets.
Don’t be late if you’ve been asked to be somewhere!
I want people to talk about their lives, feelings, difficulties, successes, frustrations and anything else. Even if you’re considering jumping ship, talk to us! We might know of an opportunity to help you on your journey.
As with openness, you need to be able to talk, and talk effectivly. Don’t “keep stuff in your head”, instead share it, talk about it, write it down. The more you communicate, the easier it becomes.
We expect you to be interested in the business, CGI industry, developments, new software, etc. If you become bored or easily distracted, then it’s time to make changes. We need you to bring this love and enthusiasm into work!
Working for Punch Digital isn’t a walk in the park. It’s fast paced, intensive and bloody tough at times. You’ll often need to get your head down, focus and nail those tasks.
That’s right, everyone makes mistakes. It’s how we stop those mistakes becoming a habit that counts.
Cock ups are also a sign that we’re trying to push ourselves, try new things, and be different. I’d rather make 1 million cock ups, than stay the same.
Lastly, Punch Digital should be a fun place to work and be a part of. Everyone should have fun.
